Recently, Intel High Performance Computing Symposium 2010 held in Xi'an. In an interview with CNET News Service,Dr. Philippe Thierry,Intel Energy and High-throughput Computing Senior Director of team engineer revealed that by 2019, the high-performance computing market will enter an Exaflops era,Intel actively engaged in the related research.
"Exaflop times will be a huge leap in high-performance computing, which provide 50 times HPC computing power than the existing HPC, the memory throughput is 100 times than the existing memory throughput, and 160 times communications, 30 times the disk and storage. Obviously, with the current processor architecture to build Exaflop times computing, there is a big challenge. For example, on energy, computing capabilities, so Intel is conducting related research actively", Thierry told CNET News Service。
He said, to meet a requirement of Petaflops and Exaflops level computing power to run large-scale simulations task,Intel, Forschungszentrum Julich (FZJ) and ParTec will sign a multi-year agreement - that is to say, the parties will build a ExaCluste Laboratory (ECL) in Julich,Germany.
The lab will focus on Petaflops and Exaflops times levels computing devices scalability and flexibility, and will develop key technologies, tools, and to establish programs for these systems, provide strong support. ECL would be the latest member of Intel European Research and Innovation Centrelabs.
In addition, Intel is also working with the French Energy Agency and other organizations to study Exaflops level computing.
For the Exaflops computing combination with China's petroleum industry, Thierry said, "China's oil industry may not immediately choose to Exaflops computing power of HPC,but one thing is for sure, the oil industry is increasing demand for high-performance computing, the introduction of Exaflops computing will be 'gone up' to allow the oil industry customers to gain benefit.
